Vernatsch & Lagrein

Veronika and Johannes are fully committed to the two autochthonous grape varieties Vernatsch and Lagrein. Autochthonous means native and that a grape variety originally came from the area in which it is grown. There, in conjunction with the climate and soil, it is able to show what it is capable of.

Vernatsch

Vernatsch is often described as an all-rounder wine. Fruity and fresh, it is simply a pleasure to drink and is almost always a suitable choice. South Tyrol Vernatsch wines are always individual and reflect the area they come from.

St. Magdalener is the strongest and fruitiest of them all – and the most elegant! It finds the best conditions on the moraine debris soils towards Renon/Ritten. Our Vernatsch vines are trained using the pergola system as “Gemischter Satz”, where different varieties are grown together, surrounded by Lagrein vines, which make up about 5 per cent of our St. Magdalener. Harvesting and fermenting these together enables our St. Magdalener to develop its incomparable elegance and freshness. Connoisseurs appreciate its soft tannins and pleasantly mild acidity.

In order to get the best out of St. Magdalener, we produce three different wines:

• CLASSICO is fresh, uncomplicated and has an emphasis on fruit.
• ANNVER is an impressive mature St. Magdalener with elegance and finesse.
• DER PFANNENSTIEL. has the most distinctive personality and goes one step further.

Lagrein

Lagrein is South Tyrol's oldest grape variety. It is thought to have originated here, in the provincial capital of Bolzano/Bozen. Lagrein loves deep, warm alluvial soils, which can be found on the sandy and gravelly sediment of Isarco/Eisack. No wonder it feels right at home at the Pfannenstielhof!

Lagrein is a dark, structured red wine full of character. It also performs extremely well when made into a stronger, more fruity rosé wine. A grape variety can achieve a lot if it is given the care and consideration it deserves.

This is why we produce three very different Lagrein wines:

• Lagrein ROSÉ is fruity and refined.
• Lagrein VOM BODEN showcases the velvety smooth side of Lagrein.
• Lagrein RISERVA shows that a mature, powerful Lagrein has nothing to hide.
